The value of understanding total ash
Plants absorb inorganic compounds such as minerals. The nature of the soil, cultivation conditions, and age of the plant can influence the total content of inorganic compounds in Cannabis flower. We measure this amount by incinerating the plant material and quantifying the total residual ash. The water and organic material is burned away and the remaining ash indicates the total inorganic material (minerals). Australia’s TGO and US Pharmacopoeia have set a limit of 20.0% on total ash in Cannabis flower for medicinal purposes.
